Privacy and Data Security in the United States: When the Law Tries to Play Catch-Up
The acquisition and management of our personal information in online environments is ubiquitous—as are data breaches. In the aftermath of massive data breaches that have impacted hundreds of millions of consumers, states are looking to pass more robust data privacy and cybersecurity laws. Companies are concerned that the laws go too far, requiring massive investments in renewed compliance efforts. Consumers are concerned that the laws do not go far enough, and do not provide adequate compensation in the event of a breach or privacy violation. This course will discuss the current legal landscape of data and privacy laws in the United States, as well as new laws that could create longstanding precedent.
